LEAGUE CHAMPS
AFA Playoff roster set
Congratulations to Team 7 Red White and Boujee on capturing both the Regular Season Championship and the Playoff Championship.
It was a great season with lots of highlights. Here’s what happened on the final week.
It kicked off with Lansing Brewery, our Brewery of the Week, serving up their Cream Ale and Angry Mayor IPA. Then we dove into the first round of competition.
The fourth ranked team Irritable Fowl Syndrome had the fourth spot in the AFAs in hand as long as no one ranked lower than them won the tournament.
Things went according to seeding 5 of the 6 matches in the first round.
The quarterfinals feature game was You Wine Some You Booze Some, the 5 seed taking out the 4 seed Irritable Fowl Syndrome, keeping their hopes of an AFA invitation alive. Irritable Fowl Syndrome still held the AFA invite despite the loss but was now counting on higher ranked teams to prevail to punch their ticket.
The 1 Seed team 7-Red White and Boujee took out the 8 seed Sudbury Bulldogs by a 3-1 score. The 3 Seed Pin Ticklers were not so lucky as they were knocked out of the tournament by 6 seed Savages who advanced to the semi finals. Meanwhile 2 seed team 8-The Big Kirbowski were down two games with 5 minutes to go to 10 seed Bonk Shells.. An unfortunate bounce knocked down the final pin in game 3 to bring the match back to 2-1. Kirbowski won game 4 to tie it up with less than a minute to go. It went to pincount in game 5 with The Big Kirbowski knocking down a bunch on the opening throw to take the match and end Bonk Shells night.
The semi finals were do or die for the two lower ranked seeds. 5 seed You Wine Some You Booze Some had to fight their way through 1 seed Red White and Boujee to make it to the AFAs. That did not happen with RWB winning the exciting match. The other lane featured 6 seed Savages vs 2 seed The Big Kirbowski. It seemed that most of the league were cheering for Savages except for Team 4 Irritable Fowl Syndrome who were hoping for a 1 v 2 seed final to punch their ticket to the AFAs. It went back and forth with each team trading wins until game 5. It was down to one pin on each side with less than a minute left when The Big Kirbowski got the final pin with the hammer to a collective groan from the rest of the league (except for Scott Love and Nikki Waffles who had just qualified for the AFAs).
The third place game took place in the Northeast Rink while the rest of the league was Fowling For Dollars in the Southeast rink. 5 seed You Wine Some You Booze Some got the win they needed a game earlier for third place with a 3-1 score over Savages who took home the fourth place money.
In the Southeast Rink, players were winning a few bucks at a time until Brenna Tavidian from Fowl Language stepped up and threw her first BONK to take the rest of the cash.
The Finals featured the 1 and 2 seed from the regular season. 2 seed The Big Kirbowski jumped out to a 2-0 lead and were cruising along until Jenn got a 4 piece kill to win game three for Red White and Boujee. That momentum was all they needed to win games 4 and 5 to take the championship with a 3 game comeback to win a matching set of trophies for the regular season and playoffs of our first fall AFA championship qualifying doubles league here at the Fowling Warehouse Ypsi Ann Arbor

- 6 seed Team 13-Savages won 2-1 over 11 seed Team 12-The Dog House

We will be sending these four teams to the AFA championship in Hamtramck on Saturday January 14, 2023.
1 Seed Red White & Boujee Jenn Johnson and Dean O'Neill
2 Seed The Big Kirbowski Scott Brown and Kirby Clifton
3 Seed Pin Ticklers Kevin Ney and Steve Bitel
4 Seed Irritable Fowl Syndrome Scott Love and Nicole Aloe
There are 5 Fowling Warehouses participating in the tournament: Hamtramck, Grand Rapids, Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Ypsi-Ann Arbor. The twenty teams will be divided into two groups of 10; the 1 and 4 seeds in one group and the 2 and 3 seeds in the other group. Each team plays all 9 other teams in the group. The team with the best record from each group advances to the finals for the championship.
Let me know if you want to go to Hamtramck to cheer on our four teams. There will be some commemorative AFA shirts for the players, and I have ordered enough for some of our fans. Make sure to keep your league shirt available so we can show some Ypsi pride on January 14th.

NOVEMBER 15, 2022 -- WEEK 10 / REGULAR SEASON ENDS
Big night last night in the world of Fowling Ypsi Ann Arbor. The regular season of our first AFA league came to an end. There were plenty of subs due to injuries, illness, hunting season, vacations, and other commitments. Team 3-Bonk Shells were out ill so a team of sisters Janel and Reese Ruhlman sat in. Team 5-Random Acts of Flyness were also both out with Patty Brown in for Brian and Lynn and company in for Paul Konkal. Kirby from 8-The Big Kirbowski is still nursing a sore elbow so Tim Stankiewicz sat in. Steve Bitel from 9-Pin Ticklers was out hunting and Scott Schoeff replaced him. Eric Savard of 11-Pins Up Balls Down could not make it and Dan Wurster came in and help win a couple games!
We started the evening with 5 teams still in the running for the three automatic seeds to the 2023 AFA Championships. Round One featured two of those teams, both with subs filling in for one of their players in head to head competition. Team 8-The Big Kirbowski was missing its namesake Kirby to a nagging elbow injury. Team 9-Pin Ticklers was without Steve for the start of hunting season. 8-The Big Kirbowski ended up taking the match 3-1 setting the tone for the evening.
Round Two, 9-Pin Ticklers were involved in a second “Big Game”, this time against the league leaders 7-Red White and Boujee and the results were exactly the same, a 3-1 loss for the Pin Ticklers. Plus over on lane 16 Tim subbing for Kirby Bonked!
Round Three it was 6-Red White and Boujee’s second important match in so many games, this time against 6-You Wine Some You Booze Some who were having trouble of their own dropping the first to games to the revitalized 14-Fowl Language and 2-It’s 4:20 Somewhere. Clint and Danielle managed to meet the level of the competition and grabbed a 3-2 win, even though Jenn pulled off Bonk #2 for the night during the losing effort.
Round Four the premiere matchup was between 4-Irritable Fowl Syndrome against 6-You Wine Some You Booze Some hot off the heels of their victory in round 3. It got stirred up pretty quickly when Scott Love got a rare Strike, only the third in FWYA2 history!! That’s catapulted them to a 3-1 victory. The Bonk Honk was getting a workout.
Round Five. Finally, the last game of the regular season. No high-level matches but with some teams vying for a seed needing a win to get in. 7-Red White and Boujee had already clinched the #1 seed at 3-1 for the night. 8-The Big Kirbowski at 4-0 had also clinched a spot and would end up #2 or #3 depending on the final game. 9-Pin Ticklers were 1-3 and had dropped into third and were tied with 33 match wins with 4-Irritable Fowl Syndrome who had caught up going 3-1. They were tied in game wins at 114 but were down to 9-Pin Ticklers by 2 game losses. The only way for 4-Irritable Fowl Syndrome to move up was a 9-Pin Ticklers loss. 6-You Wine Some You Booze Some on their 1-3 performance had only 32 match wins at this point and needed to win 3-0 and have both 4 and 9 lose their matches 0-3 to get into third place.
It ended up that all 5 teams won their last match, no drama, everyone stayed in position.

So, our first three AFA qualifiers are Jenn Johnson and Dean O’Neill of 6-Red White and Boujee, Scott Brown and Kirby Clifton of 8-The Big Kirbowski and Kevin Ney and Steve Bitel of 9-Pin Ticklers.
BRACKETS -- The rest of us will fight it out for position #4 in the AFA championships. I will just let you know that there are two possible brackets. The first version has the top three teams sitting out until a fourth-place team is determined. More likely is the second version where all 14 teams are in the bracket and only team 1 and 2 get a bye into the second round. The AFA prefers this version since anyone who makes it to the finals, or third place game has had to beat the best teams possible. (It’s also shorter). I’m meeting with them tonight and will get a ruling. Just wanted you to be prepared. Teams 5-14 will participate in “Fowling For Dollars”.
FRIDAY NIGHT TOURNAMENTS -- Thanks so much for making our inaugural season a big success. Remember that now the “Free Practice Fowling” extends until the playoffs on November 29th. Also, you might want to stop by on Friday Night at 7PM for our Singles Random Bracket. No charge to league members but you can win a $120 Lane Rental Gift Card.
WINTER LEAGUE -- Also, you can sign up for the Winter League starting Tuesday January 17th at https://fowlingwarehouse.com/ypsiannarbor/leagues/. Updated Format is 4 matches per night, each match is most wins in 20 minutes. Go 4 wins up for mercy rule. League would end at 9PM instead of 9:30PM. Still $20 a night ($200 for the season). Free AFA membership included or $25 discount for AFA members. We’ll be doing the beer of the week again and free fowling practice during the week.
BREWERIES V FROSTBITE -- Also, I want to see a good showing from the league at our first major charity tournament, Breweries v Frostbite on Thursday December 8th from 6PM to 10PM. Go to https://fowlingwarehouse.com/ypsiannarbor/events/breweries-v-frostbite-tournament/ to get all the details on how to enter.
NO SUBS -- See you not next Tuesday, but the Tuesday after that, 11/29. Be on time, no subs. If your teammate can’t play, then you have to forfeit your position. Yep, let’s hope Kirby gets healthy in the next two weeks or I have to redo the bracket!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

NOVEMBER 8, 2022 -- WEEK 9
Thanks to everyone for your feedback on the tenth week of competition. Almost everyone answered YES to whether we should add the 10th week. Everybody said they could make Tuesday November 29th for the tournament. So we are extending the league, no additional costs.
If we had not done that, the regular season would have ended last night with 7-Red White and Boujee in first, 9-Pin Ticklers, in second and 6-You Wine Some You Booze Some in third. All three of them went 4-1 and held their position. Locked out would have been 8-The Big Kirbowski who went 5-0 Tuesday with the help of E subbing for Kirby, but ended up tied for third with 31 match wins but lost the game winning percentage tiebreaker by .017 ... 4 fewer wins and 2 more losses. Also outside looking in would have been 4-Irritable Fowl Syndrome who went 3-2 and ended one win back on match play in fifth place.
Now, we have one more week to duke it out to see which teams get one of the three automatic seeds into the AFA tournament. The top 5 teams are within 5 wins of each other ... second through fifth are all within 2 games of each other.
There were some exciting results from Tuesday night. E got another bonk in game 2 and Brian Wells got his first bonk in Ypsi Ann Arbor in game 4. 14-Fowl Language had their second winning evening going 3-2 for the night! (Was it the shots?). It’s great to see some of our new Fowlers coming into their own.

Next week we will decide the playoff order and the automatic seeds to the AFA Tournament on Saturday January 14th at the Fowling Warehouse Hamtramck. It would be great to see some Maize and Blue YA2 support for our entries. I’ll get details about cost of admission.
Here is the bracket for the tournament. Anyone who does not qualify for the AFA tournament will get to participate in “Fowling For Dollars”. We take turns trying to knock down the most pins in 1 shot. Each pin = $1. We keep throwing in order until all the money is gone. A bonk or a strike wins all remaining dollars.

Round 4 has 4-Irritible Fowl Syndrome v 6-Red White and Boujee. All the teams have a tough match, some have two. And you know the rest of the field is poised to play spoiler. It will be exciting. See you before 7PM.

NOVEMBER 1, 2022 -- WEEK 8
Week Eight kicked off with either Pulsar, the dry cider from Starcut Ciders, the new brand from Shorts Brewery, or a Local's Light from Shorts for the beer crowd. There was also some Shorts swag to be had for those who could Bonk or Strike ... but there were none of those so I guess that will roll over to next week?
We also started with a bunch of "Notifications from the AFA". The AFA Finals will be on Saturday January 13th at 7PM in Hamtramck, not Grand Rapids. So we are close enough to go cheer on our champs in the finals. Also, it seems our league is just a little different than the others. That's an Ypsi thang! Others play as many games as they fit in 20 minutes each round. If you go up by 4, mercy rule applies. We play best of 5 in 20 minutes whichever comes first. Others count Bonks and Strikes as an extra win and Spares as a half win. We've been keeping track of the Strikes and Bonks but not the spares, so we will save that rule change for next year.
The biggest difference is that others play a 10 week schedule followed by the playoffs. We have a 9 week league with the 10th week being the playoffs. So, we have to decide ... do we want to have a 10th week of round robin followed by week 11 playoffs, or just stay the way we have it and fix that next year too. I need your feedback on if you want to do this and whether or not you even are going to be available on Tuesday November 22 or Tuesday November 29th. So we put together a survey. Please fill this out and if we can add the extra week, it's no charge!! Click the button below to take the survey.

If we don't add the extra week, there us only 1 week of round robin left, 5 games to decide which three teams advance to the AFA championship while the rest of us duke it out for spot #4. If we don't add the extra week, there are only 5 teams in the running for the three spots. Adding the extra team makes it so that 11 teams are possibly in the running, though 4 are very long shots. Make sure you fill out the survey by Monday.
WEEK EIGHT RESULTS
It reminded me of the early days of Tommy and Mikhail who won the June and August summer doubles leagues. This time team #1 featuring Tommy Andre and his new parter Josh Daley finally marched through the evening winning 15 or 16 games and all 5 matches. Of course they were matched stride for stride by Kevin Ney and Steve Bitel of #9 Pin Ticklers who posted the same 5-0/15-1 record. Both made big moves up the standings with their near perfect evenings.
A bunch of the leaders kept pace, posting 4-1 records. #7 Red White and Boujee, #4 Irritable Bowel Syndrome and #8 The Big Kirbowski (featuring E filling in for the injured Kirby) all went 4-1 winning 70% to 80% of their games.
Good night for #10 Seider and Doughnuts and #12 The Dog House with our own Chaz filling in for Renee. They went 3-2 and were on the winning side of the final record for the night.
Tough night for Danielle and CLint of You Wine Some You Booze Some. They lost their first three games and it was looking like a disaster, but the righted the ship and one their last two to hold on to their playoff spot. The Savages were missing their namesake Savvy Ferstle with Marcus Simich filling in. He has a gun, but control problems cost the team. They went 0-5 and dropped behind the playoff peloton.
Shout out to #14 Fowl Language. While they went 1-4 for the night, they were on the verge of greatness getting down to a the final pin almost every game. There were throwing 4 pin kill shots and competing all night long. One shot of the Red Headed Scarecrow between games 4 and 5 was the secret ingredient as they picked up a 3-0 match win in the final stanza.
Here's the current standings with a bit of a traffic jam at the top and amongst the contenders on the edge of elimination.

#7 Red White and Boujee held serve and maintained their first place position. #6 You Wine Some You Booze Some dropped into third place with their 2-3 showing. #9 Pin Ticklers went undefeated and rose into second place, a game up on third but three back of the leaders
#4 Irritable Bowel Syndrome is only 3 percentage points outside of an automatic berth picking up two games on #9 YWSYBS. #8 The Big Kirbowski paced #6 IBS and sits one game back of the auto berth to the AFA.
#13 Savages are a full 4 games back of the pack now with their goose egg this week and the other Ferstle Family team #2 It's 4:20 Somewhere only won two games but is one game behind them.
To give you an idea of what a tough season it's been for two time champs #1 The Sudbury Kings, their ace this week only got them back into eighth place, virtually tied with #10 Sieder and Doughnuts and a game up on #3 Bonk Shells and #12 The Dog House.
So depending on everyone's availability, next week could be the last week of round robin play and we might know 3 of our 4 AFA teams. Or not. One more week opens up the floor for more contenders. One good thing is that the money for the hotel rooms in Grand Rapids goes back into the prize pool and Fowling For Dollars might be a bit more enriching for us also rans! See you next Tuesday!!
Saugatuck Brewing is our brewery of the week next week. I can't wait to see what they share with us!!

OCTOBER 25, 2022 -- WEEK 7
Week Seven featured Griffin Claw Blue Sky Blueberry as our beer of the week. Mike from the brewery brought the beer and some sweet beer glasses to share with the league. Seems like he also brought Blue Skies for a couple of our teams and "The Claw" for a few others. Now that we are playing all of these teams for the third time we are starting to see some rise to the top and others taking their place supporting the league.
WEEK SEVEN RESULTS
I could do the round by round recap, but since I was locked into some intense matches, I didn't really have time to pay attention to others as I typically do. One thing you will notice is that there were only 5 teams who won more than they lost! Some of your typical suspects topped the leaderboard ... #7 Red White and Boujee, #6 Wine Some Booze Some, #4 Irritable Fowl Syndrome ... but joining them was #12 The Dog House who ended up 5-0 for the week!! These 4 top teams went 18-2 for the night, stealing most of the wins from the rest of the teams!!
- #7 Red White and Boujee with Jenn and substitute E marched through #14 Fowl Language, #10 Seider and Doughnuts, #1 The Sudbury Bulldogs and #9 Pin Ticklers before the match of the night against #6 You Wine Some You Booze Some. Clint and Danielle put up a fight but with E throwing a bonk (with a close near strike rebuttal by Clint) they suceeded 3-1.
- That was #6 Wine/Booze's only loss of the night. They'd already knocked down #13 Savages (still in costume at that point), #3 Bonk Shells, #14 Fowl Language and #2 It's 4:20 Somewhere before the final match.
- #4 Irritable Fowl Syndrome got their only loss early in match 2 against #1 The Sudbury Bulldogs. Otherwise they cleared the rest of the deck
- #12 The Dog House was the surprise of the night. They matched up against #5 Random Acts of Flyness (2W-1L), #9 Pin Ticklers (3W-1L), #2 It's 4:20 Somewhere (2W-1L), #14 Fowl Language (2W-0L) and #8 The Big Kirbowski (3W-2L P). Those are some pretty good teams on the losing side!! Their deliberate style of play had no 3-0 sweeps along the way but got the job done in every game. Good job Renee and Kellie!!
Right now #7 Red White and Boujee have a 2 game lead over second place #6 You Wine Some You Booze Some. #9 Pin Ticklers hold the third automatic berth to the AFA Championships on percentage of games won. Just outside looking in are #4 Irritable Fowl Syndrome tied on matches and just .016 percentage points back on games, #8 The Big Kirbowski one match behind and #13 Savages two games out of the championships.
Everyone has a chance to be team #4 in the AFAs. We are all playing for seed position in the eleven team tournament to advance to the AFAs. With only 2 weeks and 10 matches left, only 2 teams are mathmatically eliminated from the automatic berths, and another has a magic number of 1, a combination of losses or wins by the #3 team. Those numbers will rise after Week 8 is completed next week.
We also have a great beer on tap next week ... Short's Brewery will be bringing in their new "Starcut Ciders" for us to sample. They'll also have Local Light available for those of us on a "Beer Only" diet!!

OCTOBER 18, 2022 -- WEEK 6
Week six featured the end of the second round robin and the beginning of the third. Now each team has played the others twice and now get one more chance to get the upper hand before the playoffs. It went really well for some of the teams (if your name was Ferstle, that is) and poorly for some at the top of the table.
At least we got to celebrate, or drown our sorrows with an excellent beer of the week, Sam Adams Octoberfest. It could be our last taste of Marzen for the season as the festival comes to a close. Here's what happened in the back lanes...

WEEK SIX RESULTS
Round 1: This was our last of the second rotation of round robin matches. It featured "the battle of the owners". First time arouond it was a close match as #5 Irritable Fowl Syndrome with owner Scott Love and Nichole Aloe taking out #8 The Big Kirbowski with owner Scott Brown and Kirby Clifton. This time it was a role reversal coming down to a tie game 2-2 as time ran out. Down to one throw Scott Love missed and Scott Brown knocked some down to take the win (this time). On lane 14, #2 It's 4:20 Somewhere handed #3 Bonk Shells what would be there only loss. It was the first sign of Ferstle dominance.
Round 2: The beginning of round 3 of the Round Robin as everyone played their numerical neighbor for the third time. In an upset again on Lane 14, #3 Bonk Shells bested league leader #4 Irritable Fowl Syndrome 3-0! On lane 16, #7 Red White and Boujee ran out to a 2-0 lead before #8 The Big Kirbowski came back with a team spare and a split pickup to tie the game. Of course, E (sitting in for Dean) nailed the final pin in game 5 to win 3-2. #9 Pin Ticklers had to go to pin count to beat #10 Seider and Donuts 3-2. #12 The Dog House came back from their game one loss to trounce #11 Pins Up Balls Down 3-0. #13 Savages had a difficult time closing out #14 Fowl Language 2-1 for their second win.
Round 3: You knew trouble was brewing for league leader #4 IBS when the lost their third match in a row against eventual league leader #7 Red White and Boujee 3-1. Another marquis match up pitted #6 You Wine Some You Booze Some against #9 Pin Ticklers. The Ticklers won 3-1 on their way to an undefeated evening.
Round 4: Lane 17 was a microcosm of the evening. #4 IBS ran into one of the Ferstle buzzsaws in #13 Savages. The former league leader picked up one win while the rising star won 3. There was an upset next door on Lane 18 as #1 The Sudbury Bulldogs knocked off #6 You Wine Some You Booze Some 3-1 and on 19 #3 Bonk Shells hypnotized #8 The Big Kirbowski 3-1. Upsets Everywhere!!
Round 5: As the night drew to a close, two ships heading opposite directions passed each other on Lane 13. #9 Pin Ticklers were heading upstream going undefeated by taking down #4 Irritable Fowl Syndrome who was heading downstream going winless by a score of 3-1. Meanwhile #13 Savages were finishing off their perfect night over #8 The Big Kirbowski by a 2-1 score. It was also good to see #14 Fowl Language pick up a match win over #5 Random Acts of Flyness. One of them had to pick up their first win for the evening!!
Week 6 featured a lot of jostling in the top and middle of the table. Big winners who went 5-0 on the night were #9 Pin Ticklers, who moved from fifth up to second and #13 Savages who climbed from sixth into fourth. 4-1 was plenty to move #7 Red White and Boujee from third into first as #4 Irritable Bowl Syndrome had a winless night dropping into fifth and #6 You Wine Some You Booze Some went 3-2 dropping from second down to third. Also at 4-1 were #2, the Ferstle Family team It's 4:20 Somewhere and #3 Bonk Shells. While Brandon and Alicia only rose one spot in the standings, they are now back to .500, much closer to the leaders. The Ferstles went 9-1 as a family.
The best thing you can say is that competition is getting tougher as the teams are all getting better. Some of the top teams don't have as much ceiling for improvement while the ones in the middle of the standings are gettting closer to their skill level. Should be an exciting three weeks as we position ourselves for the playoffs with the top three teams getting a bye on the week 10 tournament and the other 11 teams claw for the last spot in the AFA championships!\

OCTOBER 11, 2022 -- WEEK 5
Another wonderful week of Fowling as we hit the halfway point in the season. The top three positions are filled by some great Fowlers, while the 4th and 5th place teams are just a match or two behind.
This week was sponsored by our brewery of the week Founders and the Beer of the Week All Day Chill Day. Carrie from Founders was very generous with both the beer and the swag. Leaguers appreciated it. Founders All Day Chill Day will be featured all week long.

WEEK FIVE RESULTS
Round 1: The evening started off with Josh Daley from #1-Sudbury Bulldogs getting a “walk off bonk” to end the match with #3-Bonk Shells. Lane 14 pitted #7 Red White and Boujee with E subbing for Jenn taking out contenders #9-Pin Ticklers 3-0, handing them their only loss of the evening. #4-Irritable Fowl Syndrome had their hands full with #5-Random Acts of Flyness eventually winning 3-2 on pincount. #8-The Big Kirbowski beat #10-Seider and Doughnuts 3-0 in what would be their only loss of the night.
Round 2: The big match of Round 2 featured #6-You Wine Some You Booze Some demolishing contender #7-Red White and Boujee, handing them their only loss of the evening.
Round 3: #6-Red White and Boujee came back from their previous match loss to give #4-Irritable Fowl Syndrome their only loss of the night 3-2. Team #14-Fowl Language got a much-needed win over #1-Sudbury Bulldogs 3-2. Close match between #8-The Big Kirbowski and #2 It’s 4:20 Somewhere which was decided on pins 3-2.
Round 4: #10-Seider and Doughnuts upset #6-You Wine Some You Lose Some 2-1 on Lane 19.
Round 5: In a fight for the top 3 positions, it came down to the last shot between #6-You Wine Some You Lose Some and #8-The Big Kirbowski. Clint prevailed, knocking down 3 of the final 4 pins handing #8-The Big Kirbowski their only loss of the evening. The winner landed in second place while the loser ended up in fourth. 2 pins fewer, their positions swap.
This week there were 5 teams that went 4-1. Of the top 5 teams, only #6-You Wine Some You Booze Some did not go 4-1, they went 3-2 allowing #4-Irritable Fowl Syndrome to move into first place on match victories 19-6. #6 is tied up with #7-Red White and Boujee at 18-7 and remains in second by .005 percentage points in game wins. Those three teams would have a tournament seed in the AFAs if everything ended tonight. #8-The Big Kirbowski (17-8) and #9-Pin Ticklers (16-9) are right behind in 4th and 5th.
I am most proud of the new teams down at the bottom of the standings. I remember when we were in our first leagues just learning the game. First you get your throw down. Then you start knocking down all but one of the pins and are close to winning. Then you become a killer, knocking down the last pin before the competition. Our new teams are at stage two. They are very close, and it is just a matter of time before they start taking out top teams. It’s going to happen sooner than later.
We have 4 more weeks of Round Robin play then the playoffs in week 10 with 11 teams vying for the #4 spot in the AFAs. No subs in the playoffs, so try to avoid booking a vacation on Tuesday November 15th.

OCTOBER 4, 2022 -- WEEK 4
Week 4 kicks off October Fowling and no better way to celebrate October than with an Oddside Beer ... maybe two! We did just that with Wes from Oddside providing some Citra Pale Ale and Bean Flicker for our ceremonial first beer(s) of October. We also had our newly decorated Pumpkin Pins. Some subs featured “E” Eric Smith in for Nicole Aloe on #4 Irritable Fowl Syndrome and Chaz as a last-minute replacement for Paul Konkal on #5 Random Acts of Flyness.
WEEK FOUR RESULTS
Some teams had a really good night. Up to this point, only one team had a 5W 0L night. This week there were three teams; #4 Irritable Fowl Syndrome, #7 Red White and Boujee and #8 The Big Kirbowski. By measure, #14 Fowl Language also had a great night. They had one only 1 match win all season and managed to triple that number this week winning 3 of their 5 matches.
Some teams had a really bad night. Up to this point we had only four 0W 5L nights. We had three 0W 5L last night; #1 The Sudbury Bulldogs, #12 The Dog House and #13 Pins Up Balls Down all did not pick up a match win.
So when you add all of the wins and losses together, there is some movement in the standings. #6 You Wine Some, You Booze Some is still in first at 15-5, but they have some company. #4 Irritable Fowl Syndrome tied them in matches and are close behind in games. #7 Red White & Boujee is one game back at 14-6 in third.
If everything ended today these three teams would be headed to the AFAs and the rest of us would fight it out for the final spot.
#8 The Big Kirbowski made a big leap in the standings with their 5-0 night to grab fourth place at 13-7. #9 Pin Ticklers dropped out of the top three into fifth place with their 2-3 night landing at 12-8.
We have three teams at 11-9; #13 Savages, #3 Bonk Shells and #2 It's 4:20 Somewhere. No one is straight up 500. #5 Random Acts Of Flyness is alone in ninth place at 9-11. #10 Seider and Doughnuts is alone in tenth at 8-12. Wouldn’t it be apropos if Moritz Seider’s number was 10? It’s 53 and we don’t have fifty third place!!
Both #1 The Sudbury Bulldogs and #12 The Dog House dropped from just below 500 to WAY below 500 on their 0-5 nights sitting at 7-13. Rounding out the standings are #14 Fowl Language out of the cellar at 4-11 which puts #11 Pins Up Balls Down in the cellar at 3-12.

NEXT WEEK our Brewery of the Week is Founder’s and they will be serving the Beer of the Week, "All Day Chill Day IPA", a refreshingly crisp Cold IPA brewed with an assemblage of hops for a subtle yet flavorful punch of pineapple, floral and lemon notes (says their website). Find out for yourself at 7PM next Tuesday at the Fowling Warehouse Ypsi Ann Arbor.
SEPTEMBER 27, 2022 -- WEEK 3
Week three featured Saugutuck Brewing and "Bonfire Brown" which was enjoyed by at least 17 folks!! As for the Leagueing, we had some subs for the evening. E filled in for Paul Konkal on #5 Random Acts of Flyness, there was an entire team sub for #14 Fowl Language and our own Chaz subbed for Kellie Castle on #12 The Dog House. Some of our leaguers took advantage of the "Fowl For Free" discount this weekend. Let's see if it paid off in wins in Week 3.
WEEK THREE RESULTS
ROUND ONE. The North Rink featured some very close matches with two going into overtime. #12 The Dog House pulled out a 3-2 victory over #13 Savages on lane #13 while #8 The Big Kirbowski was handling the subs from #14 Fowl Language handily 2-0, up 4 pins to 1 when a defensive error knocked down all 4 pins giving Fowl Language the win. A 3 pin kill in game 4 took it to game 5 tied 2-2 and both teams had one pin standing when time ran out. #8 The Big Kirbowski managed to get the kill pin and #14 Fowl Language missed on the rebuttal to seal the overtime 3-2 victory.
ROUND TWO: Two sweeps this round with #9 Pin Ticklers taking out #3 Bonk Shells 3-0 and #7 Red White and Boujee sweeping #5 Random Acts of Flyness. Two overtimes as well. #14 Fowl Language subs in their second OT in as many games with #2 It's 4:20 Somewhere sneaking a 3-2 victory and #10 Sydor and Doughnuts squeaking out a 3-2 victory over Pins Up Balls Down on pincount.
ROUND THREE: The final round robin had two sweeps (#5 Random Acts of Flyness 3-0 over #1 The Sudbury Bulldogs and #9 Pin Ticklers 3-0 over #11 Pins Up Balls Down) and two timeouts (#2 It's 4:20 Somewhere 2-1 over #3 Bonk Shells and #13 Savages 2-1 over #7 Red White and Boujee). The marquis match up pitted owners Scott Love and Scott Brown on Lane 19 as #4 Irritable Fowl Syndrome took out #8 The Big Kirbowski 3-2 on pins as time ran out.
ROUND FOUR: This was a rematch of Match 1/Week 1 as we start working our way around the schedule a second time. The clock loomed large this round as 4 of the 7 matches did not go to regulation. Teams #12 The Dog House and #8 The Big Kirbowski carved out 2-1 wins over #11 Pins Up Balls Down and #7 Red White and Boujee respectively. #2 It's 4:20 Somewhere and #9 Pin Ticklers were both ahead on pincount in game 5 when the clock ran out on #1 The Sudbury Bulldogs and #10 Sydor and Doughnuts giving the victors a 3-2 win.
ROUND FIVE: Only two teams put up a fight in Round Five. Sweeps all around; #12 over #1 3-0, #13 over #10 3-0, #8 over #11 2-0, #3 over #14 3-0 and #5 over #2 3-0. #4 Irritable Fowl Syndrome took one loss beating #7 Red White and Boujee 3-1 as did #6 You Wine Some You Lose Some 3-1 over #9 The Pin Tickers. The #6 vs #9 match up was for first place overall in the league, thought I doubt anyone knew it at the time!
STANDINGS: If the league ended today, we would be sending #6 You Wine Some You Lose Some at 11-4, #9 Pin Ticklers and #4 Irritable Fowl Syndrome both at 10-5 to the AFA Championships and the rest of out would be in the playoffs for spot #4. There are only 2 match wins separating fourth place and eleventh place with 9 teams over 500. The competition level is really strong, while we could all still improve and clean up some of that "one-pin-itis".

NEXT WEEK our brewery of the week is Oddsides and there are TWO Beers Of The Week; Bean Flicker & Citra Pale Ale. Remember you can stop by anytime, tell them at the front desk “I’m with the league” and practice for free. If you need a sub for October 5, let me know now. Also, let me know when you are sending a sub. I would love to add their name, phone and e-mail address to our sub list so they can keep up on when the next league is starting.

SEPTEMBER 20, 2022 -- WEEK 2
We are back for Week 2. A bit of a late start due to the weather but we did catch up by the end of the night. Thank you to Wolverine State Brewing Company for the free “The Dude” White Russian Stout with Vanilla, Coffee and Cocoa. The Dude Abides! Also, congrats to 19 new AFA members. Enjoy the hat and discounts in the future. You’ll receive 50% off your open play and 20% all merch until this time next year. Also, thanks to our subs, Randy Stewart for Brian Wells and Tim and Nick for our newlyweds on Wine Some Booze Some Danielle and Clint Hixon.
WEEK TWO RESULTS
ROUND ONE. Once we finally started Fowling, there were a bunch of teams that got off to a hot start and others that were cold. Hot? #6 Wine Some Booze Some, #5 Random Acts of Flyness, #10 Cider and Donuts and #9 Pin Ticklers all swept their opponents in the first round. Cold? #3 Bonk Shells, #8 Big Kirbowski, #7 Red White and Boujee and #12 The Dog House all got smoked! Big news from the first round was a BONK by Kevin Ney from Pin Ticklers. He got to keep the pin and pulled the Bonk Honk.
ROUND TWO: Only 3 sweeps this round by #6 Wine Some Booze Some (again), #9 Pin Ticklers (again) and #13 Savages. News was that three of our 4-1 teams from last week started this week 0-2 ... Bonk Shells, Red White and Boujee and Big Kirbowski. Ouch.
ROUND THREE: Things started to settle down (or The Dude started taking effect!). No 3-0 scores. Team 14 Fowl Language got their first match win EVER over Team 12 The Dog House by a score of 2-1. Bonk Shells and Boujee got their first wins, while Pin Ticklers and Wine Some Booze Some took their first losses.
ROUND FOUR: This round was a mixed bag as everyone started to move toward .500 (save a couple of teams, Big Kirbowski I’m looking at you). Sweeps for #5 Random Acts, #7 Boujee and #10 Cider and Donuts and a fifth game “whoever knocks down the most pins” extra time win for #1 Sudbury Bulldogs over Pin Ticklers (loss two after two sweeps).
ROUND FIVE: This is the round where everyone did what they had to do to get to 3 wins and 2 losses. 10 of the 14 teams achieved that with #2 4:20 Somewhere, #3 Bonk Shells, #6 Wine Some Booze Some and #9 Pin Ticklers doing it with a sweep. That’s right ... 10 teams finished 3-2 for the day. One team was (im)perfect ... The Big Kirbowski finished the night 0-5 winning only 2 of 16 games.
STANDINGS: We have 4 teams tied at 7-3 with #9 Pin Ticklers in first at 26-13, #6 Wine Some Booze Some in second at 22-12, #7 Red White and Boujee in third at 20-15 and #3 Bonk Shells in fourth at 16-13. #13 Savage is the only 6-4 team in fifth place with Alan Rajkovic taking over for Eric Smith as Savvy Ferstle’s partner. 4 teams tied at 5-5 ranging from 4 games over 500 to 2 games under 500. 3 teams at 4-6 ranging from 500 to 9 games below 500. #11 Pins Up Balls Down is at 3-7 in thirteenth place and #14 Fowl Language is at 1-9 in the final spot.

Next week we have Saugatuck Bonfire Brown as our Beer of the Week. Remember you can stop by anytime, tell them at the front desk “I’m with the league” and practice for free. We should have our shirts in time for week 4 (sorry about the delay, we’ll get better at this). Remember to wear your AFA hat proudly and tell everyone about the Fowling Warehouse. Heck, impress your friends, bring them in and show off as you skip the cash register and other fowlers step off from “That AFA Pro”.
See you next Tuesday!!

SEPTEMBER 13, 2022 -- WEEK 1
We put a lot into making this league great with the Free Beer to kick off each week, the AFA membership, the league shirt and the four spots in the AFA Championships. Boy has it paid off! What a roster of 28 players who span the spectrum between newbies and toy warehouse veterans. It ended up with 14 teams, 9 weeks of 5 match round robin which will decide 3 teams to qualify for the AFA Championships in Grand Rapids in January 2023. Then on week 10, teams 4 through 14 will duke it out for the last spot on our 4 team AFA roster.
Here is our roster. We are only missing one team name but that should fill in when Sue Kinney joins us for the first time. Also, it seems that by rule Eric "E" Smith can only compete in 1 AFA qualifying league and since Hamtramck is his home club, he is going to try to qualify there. Savvy Ferstle, the skipper of Team 13, the Savages, managed to quickly find a replacement who will be taking over this week ... Alan Rajkovic. He will be joining us next week and "E" will be in the sub pool. So taking a week off won't be such a big deal with "E" filling in! |
So now that the teams are set, the competition begins.
Round One was just as you thought it would ... Team 1 vs Team 2, Team 3 vs Team 4, and so on. I used to do a little recap of each match but to be honest with you, I just can't keep track of 7 matches simultaneously. So just the big news. ISABELLA FERSTLE from Team 2 "It's 4:20 Somewhere" GOT A BONK!!! They won that game, but lost the other three to 2 time champ Tommy Andre and his new partner Josh Daley, The Sudbury Bulldogs. |
In a match of veterans on Lane 15, The Big Kirbowski took out July champ Jenn Johnson and her new partner Dean O'Neill, their only maatch loss of the night. Also, no shutouts in the first round. Everyone got a taste of winning a game. Rookies Danielle and Eric Savard of "Pins Up Balls Down" won their very first league match ever!
Round Two saw a couple of upsets. Team 10, Shawn Fallon's unnamed team took out Team 13 Savages with perrenial H-Town champ Eric "E" Smith and Savvy. Team 3 Bonk Shells shed their also ran status and racked up win number two against Team 14 Fowl Language. Team 6 You Wine Some You Lose Some featuring newlyweds Danielle and Clint Hixon took their only loss of the night to Team 9 the Pin Ticklers with Kevin Ney and Steve Bitel who have some OG Toy Warehouse roots. Kellie Castle and Renee Smith from team 12 The Dog House rebounded from their round one loss to take a win over Team 1 The Sudbury Bulldogs.

Round Three did not feature many upsets. The winners continue winning. Team 5 Random Acts of Flyness with OGs Brian Wells and Paul Konkal finally won their first match over Team 10. Red White and Boujee (7) Pin Ticklers (9) Savages (13) Wine Some Booze Some (6) and The Big Kirbowski (8) all won on their way to the top of the standings.
Round Four was the first win for Scott Love and sub Randy Stewart on Team 4 Irritable Fowl Syndrome ovewr the previously undefeated Pin Ticklers (9). You figured when you paired one of the owners with a multi Super Fowl champ their first win would come before the 4th round! Bourbon was involved. Savages (13) handed The Big Kirbowski (8) their first defeat. Bonk Shells (3) picked up their third win over The Dog House (12).
Round Five the teams with any remaining stamina won out. Red White and Boujee (7) and the suddenly hot Irritable Fowl Syndrome (4) shut out their competition. The Big Kirbowski (8) managed to squeak out a 3-2 victory over The Sudbury Bulldogs (1).

THE STANDINGS
There are no undefeated teams, which is heartening. No one is unbeatable. 5 teams sit at 4W 1L. The tiebreaker is game winning percentage and Danielle and Clint from Wine Some Booze Some (6) top that list followed by Kevin and Steve from Pin Ticklers (9) who are both OG's and Rookies. Red White and Boujee (7) are close behind in third. If the league ended today, these three would be AFA Qualifiers. Bonk Shells (3) were the hard luck team of the summer leagues. If the ball could bounce the wrong way for them, it did. But it seems their luck has turned and they sit in 4th place. The Big Kirbowski (8) rounds out the top 5.
The only team at 3W 2L is Savages (13) in sixth place. Let's see if Savvy can keep up the momentum with her new partner.
There is another 5 team block at 2W 3L lead by Irritable Fowl Syndrome (4) at 10-8. The rest all have 8 or 9 wins with a variety of losses.
Team 10 and Pins Up Balls Down (11) each pulled out one win but were saddled with 4 losses and notched 5 wins and 11 and 12 losses respectively.
Just behind them are rookies Fowl Language (14). They managed 4 game wins but no match wins.

WEEK 2
We are looking foward to week 2 of the league. Each of us will get to play almost of the teams we missed last week. If you are paid in full as many of you are, we will hand out AFA cards and hats while supplies last. We should have our league shirts week 3 or week 4. The brewery of the week next week is Wolverine State Brewing and the beer of the week is "The Dude" a White Russian inspired White Stout with Coffee, Vanilla and Cocoa. The Dude abide ... the Dude abides. See you next week! |
