YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP JULY 28, 2022 – The final night of league is a mixture of emotions. Anticipation because a new champion is to be crowned. Anxiety to play well under pressure. Joy of seeing all of your Fowling friends again. Sadness as it is coming to a close and you won’t get to see this exact group of Fowlers every week.
It was also fun to see all team members and no subs for the first time as we played round seven of the regular season to determine the President’s Cup winner for best regular season record. The leader rounding the final turn was Pulled Pork Sandwich with a 5-1 record. They had drawn last year’s “Dragon Slayer” BonkShells, who had unexpectedly taken out #2 seed “The Jakes” in round one of last month's playoffs. It seemed like we were headed down that road again as Brandon and Alicia took game one of the match. But Jenn and Neil righted the ship quickly and peeled off 4 straight to take the win. Neil and Jenn triumphantly raised the President’s Trophy and collected $100. Team HerNaughty didn’t roll over and play dead for Goin’ Commando. Nandor and Cindy put up a fight winning two before Patty and Pappy picked up their fourth win. That’s What She Said were their exuberant selves but had some trouble with the pole in their match with Balls Deep. The first two wins (not inches) from Griff and Brad hurt the most while Ruth and Jen grabbed one victory by the ... well, let’s just say that got a win. The match ended on collateral as Kill Pin Patty lived up to her name and bounce one off her shot on the next lane and took down Ruth and Jen’s last pin. The match ended 4-1. The most important match in round seven pitted the two second place teams, Haggis and KirbWell in a battle for the vice president’s trophy for the second-best finish in the regular season. They both sported 4-2/20-12 records. On paper it looked really competitive. But on the lanes it ended up leaning heavily in the Scotts favor as they won the first two. KirbWell got game three and took game four to overtime, but Scott picked off the overtime pin on the first shot. Haggis took the VP trophy and Kirby and Brian ended up dropping into fifth place due to the logjam at 4-2. |
Here is how everyone fared in the regular season and seeded for the tourney.
|
THE PLAYOFFS
The first round started and lucky BonkShells got to play Pulled Pork Sandwich again (yay?!?). Dragon Slayer like last time? Nope. Same result as round seven. They picked off a win but lost the match to Jenn and Neil 3-1. Brandon and Alicia’s season was over. The other half of the bracket had the 4 seed Balls Deep versus the 5 seed Kirbwell. Both teams had 21 wins and were very evenly matched. This time it happened on the lanes too. They were long games and time was ticking down in the last minute when Kirby got a kill pin to put the match at 2-1. Balls Deep did not have time to respond so Brian and Kirby moved on to the semis while Brad and Griff took a seat. In the other bracket, 2 seed Haggis made quick work of 7 seed Team HerNaughty, though there was some promise in game 3 for Nandor and Cindy who got the first 9 pretty quickly only to contract a case of “OnePinItis” allowing the Scotts time to zero in on the kill pin for a 3-0 victory. 6 seed That’s What She Said had a chance for revenge for the collateral exit in round 7 as they drew 3 seed Goin’ Commando. Ruth and Jen did win one game, but Patty and Pappy got to 3 wins within the 20-minute playoff time limit to win the match. |
The Semi Finals were both sweeps with Pulled Pork Sandwich taking out Kirbwell 3-0 ending Kirby and Brian’s season. In the other semi, Scott Brown had to answer the question “When did you stop beating your wife?” The answer was “not in the Semis” as Haggis swept Patty Brown and Goin’ Commando 3-0.
The Finals looked like they would be very competitive. Pulled Pork Sandwich and Haggis finished finished 1-2 in the regular season, they both had the same number of losses (13). Jenn Johnson even requested that we turn off the clock so we could go the distance ... the fans said NO and the match started with the speedball time constraint of 20 minutes. The games were close but Pulled Pork Sandwich came out on top of all three well within the 20 minute time frame! We have our July champions, Jenn and Neil from Pulled Pork Sandwich. Again the owners, the Scotts from Haggis were also rans. They got $100, but there is no trophy for second place. There are two trophies for the playoff champs plus two $100 bills for Jenn and Neil from Pulled Pork Sandwich! Congratulations!
Teams ranking 3 through 8 went Fowling for Dollars; the remaining $62 in the prize kitty. Finally, Team BonkShells came out on top with Brandon knocking down 9 and Alicia picking off 2.

AUGUST TUESDAY NIGHT DOUBLES
When we started the night, we were three teams short of the 8 teams needed for our August Tuesday Night Doubles league. By the time we finished our drinks, we were two teams over our 8-team limit! We had some late online signups and more interest from the July league than we thought. Scott and I have no problem sitting out a month and if anyone is tentative about their participation stating on Tuesday, let me know. We can bring it down to 8 teams. Or, we just go with it and roll for an extra week with 10 teams. Get with me this weekend to let me know if you want to bow out. Otherwise, we add an extra week. Again, great season and I can’t wait to hang with you all again soon. I’ll keep you informed about our Fall AFA Qualifier league. We are leaning toward Tuesday night right now but could be swayed by other commitments and which nights Hamtown does their leagues to open it up to the full talent pool. Remember, you can play in both, but you can only represent one Fowling Warehouse in the AFA Championships in January. See you then. |

JULY 21 – YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, MI: Thursdays are getting to be a busy day at the Fowling Warehouse. We had three parties preceding the league and a bunch of walk ins as we were getting started.
Griff and Brad from Balls Deep got stuck behind a rollover accident at 23 and Washtenaw so the other three matches started as they were rolling in. Kirbwell was taking on That’s What She Said on lane 17 and there were some tight games in the match, but Brian and Kirby managed to finish off all 4 games to sweep Ruth and Jen. When Jen and Neil walked in the Warehouse, they thought they were playing Patty and Pappy. But the members of Goin’ Commando looked suspiciously like E and Randy! Neil was pissed! Beating E and Randy in a best of 7 match is a tall order. As is usual, Pulled Pork Sandwich finished off two of their games with a 4 piece kill. But those were the only two wins as the subbed-out Goin’ Commando won the match 4-2. Balls Deep and Haggis were sitting 2 and 3 in the standings when the match started 5 minutes late on lane 15. Balls Deep was up for finishing as Griff got the kill pin in games 1 and 2. Haggis responded with a win in game three but lost the last two with the final shot being a 4 piece kill from Brad. Final? 4-1 Balls Deep. Since all the matches ended early, attention turned to lane 19 where one of our teams was going to win their first match. Bonk Shells and Team HerNaughty were locked in a tight match. Alicia and Brandon were up 3-2 when Cindy got the final pin to take it to 3-3 with 5 minutes left. As the clocked ticked down to 60 second remaining, we shut off the timer as pin count dropped to 1 for each side. After a few tosses, Team HerNaughty prevailed for the match and a 4-3 win. BonkShells openly wondered if they were cursed!!
After the first round, there were a lot of teams with a 16-11 record. Something had to give!!
Round Two answered a lot of those questions. League Leader, coming off their first match loss of the season drew Team HerNaughty coming off their first match win of the season. Game 1 went like you thought it would with Jenn and Neil taking the win. But Cindy and Nandor picked off the league leaders in game 2 and 3 taking a 2-1 lead after three. Jenn rubbed here eyes, got down to business and Pulled Pork Sandwich won the last three to take the match, including a 2-4-10 kill. Balls Deep was in the driver’s seat after the first round, but might have celebrated too much during halftime (Griff blames Neil) and KirbWell pounced to dominate with a 4-1 match win. Meanwhile, Haggis was smarting from a first round beatdown and That’s What She Said was is the wrong place at the wrong time. The Scotts won the first three games quickly while Ruth and Jen provided some loud and hilarious comic relief on defense. In game 4 Ruth decided she had enough and was on fire barely missing the kill pin a few times before coming through. But that was that as Haggis won game 5 on 4 throws to take a 4-1 victory. BonkShells drew the short straw for the second round and took on E and Randy of Goin’ Commando. Brandon took it out on E’s beer in game one and also kicked off a game with an 8 piece, which they won. But that was the only win as Goin’ Commando prevailed 4-1.
As we go into our final week, Pulled Pork Sandwich holds the top position at 5-1/22-12. There are 4 teams at 4-2 with both Haggis and Kirbwell tied for second at 4-2/20-12 and Goin’ Commando in fourth just one loss back at 4-2/20-13. All four of these teams have a chance at the President’s trophy. Balls Deep is in fifth at 4-2/17-15 ... just not enough game wins to catch Pulled Pork Sandwich for the title. The final three teams tell the story of how important knocking down the 10th pin is. That’s What She Said is 2-4 but only 8-20 in games. When it came time to get the match win, they knocked down the 10th pin twice. Team HerNaughty at 1-5/10-22 has more game wins than TWSS but only finished once. Bonk Shells has more game wins than both of those teams but sits in eighth at 0-6/12-23 because they couldn’t pick off the last pin when they needed to. Or because they are cursed. But we still remember last year when the entered the tourney as the 7 seed and clipped the dominant 2 seed “The Jakes” so maybe they are saving it up for the money shot!!

Next week is fun and excitement as we end the season with a bang. One round to determine the President’s Trophy Winner ($100) and VP Trophy Winner ($50) to seed the second-round tournament. We play 3 rounds, 20 minutes/Best of 5. Win early or go home. Tourney Winner is the league champ ($200) and runner ups grab a cool hunny ($100). We will still have time for a quick $62 “Fowling For Dollars” with teams ranked 3-8 getting a buck a pin till all the cash is gone ... however a bonk or a strike wins all remaining cash.
We will have a Tuesday night August Doubles league. We already have a few teams signed up, but are looking for a few more. Go to www.fowlingwarehouse.com/ypsiannarbor/leagues to sign up now. We start Tuesday, August 2 ... only 5 days after this league’s final night.
Starting in September we will have our AFA Qualifier doubles league. I don’t have all the details yet but the top 2 or 4 teams will win a spot in the AFA Championships in January 2023. We think Ypsi talent is right up there with the rest of the Warehouses and don’t want to settle for just a good showing; we want to win this thing in our first open year!!

JULY 14 – YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, MI: Week Two in the July Thursday Doubles League was festive. The FWYA2 had been full all day with parties from the Saline Chamber of Commerce Happy Hour and the KLA company party. To remain close to the bar we were forced over to lanes 17 through 20. Again, we had some subs ... Paul Konkal filling in for Scott Love on Haggis, E for Kirby on KirbWell and Jeff Stewart for Bill Griffin and Diggy for Brad Nester, replacing the entire Balls Deep team. We also got to see Jenn Johnson and Neil Turchick for the first time as their subs won both matches for them last week.
The festivities started almost before the first throw. We had visitors from H-Town joining the fun on lane 16; Team Cherry Bomb (Mo, Amanda and Missy) with Scott Michalowicz. Just as we said “Let’s Fowl”, Missy let loose with a perfect BONK throw on Lane 15! Nice toss Missy! It was her first bonk ever.
ROUND ONE
The competition was hot on Lane 16 as the two top teams faced off with Pulled Pork Sandwich (2-0/8-2) took on Haggis (2-0/8-3). Both are named after disappointing meats, but the match did not disappoint! They split the first two games, then Pulled Pork Sandwich won games 3 and 4 to take a commanding 3-1 lead. Haggis held serve winning games 5 and 6 to tie it up and quickly knocked down the first 9 pins in game 7, only to have Neil close out the game with a three piece for the 4-3 win.
Lane 19 was the site of a battle between Kirbwell and Bonk Shells (who are still looking for their first match win). It will be happening soon, but not this time as Brandon and Alicia took Brian Wells and sub E all the way to 7 games before falling 4-3.
Goin’ Commando was only one game from sweeping last week but they ran into some hot subs, Stewie and Diggy for Balls Deep in round one this week. Despite some great play from Patty and Pappy, they lost 4-1.
Longtime friends became rivals on Lane 18 as Jen and Ruth from That’s What She Said matched up with Cindy and Nandor from Team HerNaughty. No one was going to win 4 games. This was a marathon, not a sprint! But Cindy managed a kill pin on the last shot to get a second win despite falling 3-2.
ROUND TWO
Round Two took a while to get started as we had to wait for those “on break” and Missy to get her Bonk Honk in.
Round Two did match Round One for excitement. Bonk Shells was in the middle of it again taking on the all sub Balls Deep featuring Fowling veterans Jeff Stewart and Diggy. On paper, Stewie and Diggy should have walked away with this one and it looked like that was how it was going to go as they went up 3-0. But Brandon and Alicia fought back winning the next three and taking it to 3 pins to 1 pin in the final game before Stewie did one of his patented “QB Moves” for the kill. Alicia was tasked with picking up the 7-8-9 on the rebuttal. She was schooled to put the ball right between two of the pins and slide the third over for the kill. And she did just that ... but TOO GOOD. She slid the ball between the 8 and 9 pin touching neither. Final was 4-3 Balls Deep.
Goin’ Commando got back into their groove and made quick work of KirbWell with both Kill Pin Patty and Kill Pin Pappy finishing off games as Brian and E had trouble targeting the last pin. It ended up with a 4-2 victory for Goin’ Commando.
Pulled Pork Sandwich cemented their hold on the lead with a 4-1 victory over That’s What She Said featuring a Jenn Johnson 6 pin opener and a Neil Turchick 4 piece for a team spare to finish off Jen and Ruth with a 4-1 final score.
Scott Brown and Paul Konkal aka Haggis moved pretty quickly to win the first two games over Team HerNaughty. Things slowed down as Cindy got her aim and distance dialed in. The last two games were both 10-9 scores, both wins for Haggis who swept 4-0.
STANDINGS
We are just over halfway through the season and Pulled Pork Sandwich will finish with a winning record already having four wins and no losses to their credit. They are alone in first place. Haggis holds second with a 3-1/15-7 record with Balls Deep in third at 3-1/12-10. Goin’ Commando is in fourth at 2-2/12-10. Same number of games won as Balls Deep, but only winning 2 matches. Kirbwell is in fifth with just one more game lost than Goin’ Commando at 2-2/12-11. That’s what she said arrives in sixth place a completely different way. When the win, the barely win. When the lose, it’s not as close. That’s how they are 2-2/7-12. How close are Bonk Shells to getting a match win? They have won more games at 0-4/8-15 than the team ranked two matches ahead of them in sixth. Eighth place belongs to Team HerNaughty at 0-4/4-15.
Next Week in Round One, the top tier of the standings faces off as #1 Pulled Pork Sandwiches has #4 Goin’ Commando and #2 Haggis plays #3 Balls Deep in a battle of the one loss teams. Round Two pits the top tier of the league with the bottom tier. We call that the “Upset Special”. Someone will fall. You can all but guarantee it.
If you need a sub for July 21, let me know now. We have a pretty good slate of subs (obviously). Air Conditioning makes summer fowling a bit more bearable.

YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP JULY 7, 2022 -- First night of the July Thursday Night Doubles League began. A great mix of folks with two teams from last month’s league, some Hamtramck leaguers and some “OGs” from the Toy Warehouse sprinkled into the mix. The level of play was high and that was apparent in the first round which took just over 20 minutes instead of the regulation 45 for the winners to reach 4 wins in our “Best Of 7 or 45 minutes whichever comes first” format. That’s because only one of the losing teams manage to get a win ... Three 4-0 matches and one 4-1 match. That’s not to say the games were not competitive ... they were. There were a lot of single pin standing losses out there.
ROUND ONE
Team 1 featuring Jen Konkal and Ruth Casper chose the team name “That’s What She Said” as the top ranked all female team in the league*. But they ran into Team 2, Patty “KPP” Brown and Brian “Pappy” Tingstad who swept them 4-0 in the opener. KPP and Pappy chose the name “Goin’ Commando” from their previous stint as the #1-#2 on Team Army from the color league.
Team 3 is Alicia Curley and Brandon Tuttle, holdovers from the June League. Donning their signature Hawaiian Shirts they chose the name “Bonk Shells” a portmanteau of Brandon’s Bonk from June and Conch Shells. They played the other holdover from June, Team Four, Scott Love and Scott Brown playing as Haggis, something only Scots love. Something in the Haggis set Scott Love afire as he accounted for the majority of the pins in their 4-0 victory over Bonk Shells.
Team 5 was supposed to be Jenn Johnson and Neil Turchick but they looked suspiciously like Eric Smith and Dan Abraham from Hamtramck! Yep, the tradition of an “all subs” team remains from last month! Since Jenn and Neil were not around the name “Pulled Pork Sandwiches” was chosen for them. Team 6 is Bill Griffin and Brad Nester, long time Fowlers who have followed the franchise west. I have been told their name choice of “Balls Deep” is derived from their habit of overthrowing. It did not matter how hard they threw against the counterfeit Jenn and Neil. It’s hard to beat E and Dan on any night and they won all 4 as subs in this match.
Team 7 is Brian Wells and Kirby Clifton, both FWYA2 owners who were paired together for the soft opening tournament back on March 31. They combined names as “KirbWell”. They managed to win four against Team 8, longtime Fowling Family members Nandor and Cindy Hernadi. They chose “Team HerNaughty” as their name and a way to remind me how to pronounce their last name. They lost the match against KirbWell and were the only losing team to pick up a win in their effort.
ROUND TWO
Much more exciting with a bonk and match that went the distance.
Pulled Pork Sandwich beat KirbWell who put up a pretty good fight losing 4-2 considering E posted our first July Bonk during the match. He got to pull the horn during the post-match festivities.
Balls Deep posted their first match win 4-1 over Team HerNaughty. Despite being on the losing end of both of their matches, they did not get swept in either.
Haggis had their hands full with Goin’ Commando. They were down 2-1 but fought back to a 3-2 lead before the play of the game. Scott Brown (who had earlier accidentally kicked the ball during a block attempt on defense) was paying less attention when Patty Brown bounced one off the edge of the board, off his crotchal area and into the 6-10 pin combo for the kill to tie the match 3-3. Thankfully, Scott Love was firing on all cylinders and hit the kill pin in game 7 for the game and match.
All eyes they turned to the match on Lane 15 between That’s What She Said and Bonk Shells. 10 minutes left and they had made it to game 6 with That’s What She Said holding a 3-2 lead. As it almost always goes, it was down to one last pin on both sides. No matter how many throws it took, it stayed that way as the 45 minute clock ran out on the Bonk Shells.
