WEEK 10
the tournament!
WEEK 9
Position Night
Week 9 – Tuesday March 14, 2023
We stuck close to home again for our Brewery of the Week and Beers of the Week. Wolverine Brewing Company of Ann Arbor was kind enough to have the Tundra King Tangerine West Coast Style India Pale Lager and their Black Cherry Wheat to whet our appetite for Fowling (then only $4 a pint all week long!)
This was position night with each team playing the one next to it in the standings in the first round. It’s called a “Ladder Tournament”. If you win your match, you move up the ladder. If you lose you move down the ladder. So each game you are playing a team on par with you. It is supposed to make for some very competitive play. Sure enough, it did, with no team winning all their matches and no team losing all their matches. Since positions 3 through 6 were all tightly packed before we started this week, it was not going to take much to change standings positions.

There were two bonks. Isabella Ferstle make the hardest and loudest bonk possible. Scott Love made the softest and quietest bonk possible. We had a sub (Jacqueline) throw a strike! There were at least two spares, maybe more. Y’all are getting pretty good at this game.
After four games of some intense competition, here’s how it wound up. Team 6 Seriously would have to lose two more games than Team 8 Fowled Folks Home to give up their 2-game lead and first place. And that happened. They went 1-3 including a round 1 loss to Team 8 who went 3-1 to close the two-game gap. However, Team 6 has such a high winning percentage in the games category that they were able to hold on to the regular season First Place for the President’s Trophy. Team 8 gets the Vice President’s Trophy but not without a scare from Team 1 It’s 4:20 Somewhere who got to play Team 8 twice during the night. First time out they got a bonk and a win. The second time they got beat. The win in the final game might have handed them second place. Third will have to do. First three places in the regular season get the Prize Money (to be awarded next Tuesday).

So that means it’s time for the Playoffs.
With last night’s results included the playoff seedings have been set. If you get hot, anyone can win!! The first round will be the “play-in” at 7PM. Teams ranked 15 through 18 play to get into the 16-team elimination, starting at 7:30PM. Quarter finals at 8:00PM. Semi Finals at 8:30PM and Finals at 9:00PM. Winner $200. Runner up $100. Third Place $50. Fourth Place $25.
After that at 9:30PM it’s FOWLING FOR DOLLARS. Each member of each team, from rank 18 to rank 5 get to throw one ball at 10 pins. We start with $100. For each pin knocked down, you get a buck. Bonk or a strike? You win the remaining cash. Good reason to stick around after elimination (plus you can Fowl free one last time on empty lanes while the tournament continues).

This is a good time to mention that we have two new leagues for you to sign up for. They are 4-week leagues, completely contained in April. The Doubles League with a twist. Teams are reset based on your results so the persons at the bottom of the standings will be placed a team with the person at the top of the standings, 2ndworst with 2nd best and so on. Each individual player keeps their teams scores from the week and joins a new partner the next week. It will be interesting to see what a little equity will bring.
The second league is actually a 4-week tournament called “The Club Championship”. It’s a singles league 8 x 10-minute matches per night. The person who wins the most matches at the end of 4 weeks will be declared the Club Champion and will be the first person in Ypsi to have their name on our trophy and their picture on our Wall Of Fame.
You can sign up at https://fowlingwarehouse.com/ypsiannarbor/leagues/ where you will also find pricing information.
Brewery of the Week is Cheboygan Brewing and the beer of the week is the Blood Orange Honey which has been a big favorite around here. First one is compliments of the brewery on Tuesday. Only $4 each after that.
All of the results from week 9 are below. Don't forget to sign up for the Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/472216891458794.

WEEK 8
BONKS AND STRIKES AND SPARES ... OH MY!
Week 8 – Tuesday March 7, 2023
Last week it wasn’t a beer from Finland. This week, we stuck closer to home with Arbor Brewing in Ypsilanti our Brewery of the Week. They brought one from their “Euchre” series; Table Talk, a Dark Czech Lager a very drinkable session beer. It will be only $4 a pint here at the Warehouse all week.
Three Bonks in 6 minutes last week was amazing. This week it was just the sheer number of Bonks, Spares and Strikes that amazed this cub reporter! In Game One, Jaren Carble and Vinnie Varcoe of 9-Squirt Off The Wall combined on a team spare for the extra half point. Brad Crone of 13-Pindiots got a bonk and pulled the Bonk Honk. In game 2, Eric Geiger and Sara Gadwa of 10-Don't Drink and Derive combined for a spare while 13-Pindiots sent another player to the Bonk Board, this time Christopher Castro (not his first time in league). In Game 4, Pat Matway from 2-Two Bears One Lane pulled off the Bonk but somehow the team still lost the match! There was a Strike and a Spare from just one team in Game 5. Isabella Ferstle and Terry Ferstle of 1-It's 4:20 Somewhere combined for a spare followed by a Strike from Terry. It just happened to be against the first-place team 6-Seriously? who were mercied 5 ½ to 1 in game 5 after plowing through the competition in the first four matches.
So yeah. Good Fowling in the last week of Round Robin.
Only one team managed to go 5-0 this week ... Tommy Andre and Josh Daley of 11-Drinkers with a Fowling Problem swept the competition. Four teams posted 4-1 records for the evening 6-Seriously? which held their first place lead by 2 games over 8-Fowled Folks Home who also was a member of the 4-1 club. 1-It’s 4:20 Somewhere went 4-1 and rode that success into a 3rd place position as 2-Two Bears One Lane had an off night against some tough competition to drop 3 games and into 4th place. Of course with all those bonks 13-Pindiots went 4-1 to bring themselves back to 500 and 8th place.
Next week, it’s position night. Game one, you play the team next to you in the standings. You win the match, you move up the bracket. Lose your match you move down the bracket. We play 4 games and add the totals to the existing standings to award the prize money and set the brackets for our tournament on week 10, Tuesday March 22.

WEEK 7
BONK BONK BONK.
Week 7 – Tuesday February 28, 2023
The Beer of the Week wasn’t even a Beer ... it was the Finnish Long Drink, which is a Gin Cocktail in a can that was introduced as the signature drink of the 1952 Helsinki Olympic games. First was free, then $4 after that. They will be $6 all week long before they return to their regular price.
The Northeast rink was noisy in game one. Every couple of minutes you could hear the entire rink cheer in unison. That usually means only one thing ... a Bonk! But three in a row? Does that happen? It does.
First was from super sub Chelsea Wright playing for Dave Smith on 14-The Outlaws at 7:30PM. It was her second time Fowling! Next was Shawn Fallon from 6-Seriously! giving them the rare 5-0 sweep (4 pins plus the extra Bonk point) over 18-The Fowlskis at 7:32PM. Hardest to swallow was Tommy Andre from 11-Drinkers with a Fowling Problem who Bonked at 7:34PM as time was running out. They were losing 2-3 to 13-Pindiots and with the Bonk got a last second win, plus the extra point as time ran out for a 4-3 match win. Ouch!
All three got to keep their Bonk Pin, pull the Bonk Honk and put their name on the Bonk Board. Sadly, all three names were erased from the board the next morning since it was the last day of February, and the March Bonk Board artwork took over. No worries. Preserved in time forever on the Bonks page on our website https://fowlingwarehouse.com/ypsiannarbor/bonks/. Both Tommy and Shawn had bonked during February, and they merely added “x2” to their existing entry on the board!
Two Teams managed to go 4-0 this week ... 6-Seriously? who opened their league lead back to two games and 2-Two Bears One Lane who pulled back within one game of second place.
We have one more week of Round Robin and the top 4 money spots are 6-Seriously??, 8-Fowled Folks Home, 2-Two Bears One Lane and 1-It's 4:20 Somewhere going into Week 8. They would have those spots almost wrapped up if not for the Week 9 Position Night which will require you to repeatedly beat teams of your same caliber if you want to advance in the standings. So, enjoy the leisurely pace next week as we enjoy the Beer of the Week “Table Talk” on draft from Arbor Brewing right here in Ypsi. Week 9 is going to be nuts!!

WEEK 6
OH MERCY MERCY ME
Week 6 – Tuesday February 21, 2023
The night kicked off as it always does ... with some beer samples. This week we got to taste the IPA Variety Pack from Sweetwater with 4 different beers. It was tough to “hit for the cycle” though as the Mosaic ran out early to the few, the proud, who ordered early and wisely.
The long weekend produced a record number of “Mercy Games”, y’know when you end it because one team us up by 4 games. There were 8 Mercies in the first three sets of games ... but then none in the fourth game. There were lots of teams that were involved in more than one Mercy. For instance, you typically see Scott Love and Shawn Fallon from #6-Seriously? walking outside the rink before time runs out because they Mercied some other team ... but this time THEY got Mercied in game one only to perform the rare 5-1 Mercy in game 3 with a Shawn Fallon BONK on top. Ruth and Jim Casper from #12-Couples Therapy got Mercied in game 2 only to come back and win on the Mercy rule in game 3. Scott and Patty Brown from #8-Fowled Folks Home won back-to-back Mercies in games 2 and 3. Geez!
Shawn Fallow (the reluctant Bonker) wasn’t the only one to pull the Bonk Honk last night. Ryan Grangood from #17-Intentional Pounding pulled off the feat as well in game 3. Congrats Ryan!!
Only one team #8-Fowled Folks Home managed to go undefeated this week so that should make for a few changes in the standings. Still in first is #6-Seriously? at 22-3 with #8-Fowled Folks Home right behind at 21-4. #2-Two Bears One Lane and #1-It’s 4:20 Somewhere are tied for third at 19-6, a very slight advantage to Two Bears on game percentage points.
Next week our Brewery of the Week isn’t even a brewery and our Beer of the Week isn’t really a beer. It’s the Finnish Long Drink in one of three flavors; Traditional Citrus, Zero Sugar Citrus and Cranberry. First one is on the “brewer” and any additional Long Drinks are $4 on league night. They’ll go up to their discount price of $6 for the rest of the week so get’em while their cheap!!

WEEK 5
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY – I LOVE THIS LEAGUE
Week 5 – Tuesday February 14, 2023
We expected mass cancellations for Valentine’s Day but everyone decided that they just loved Fowling. Instead of overpaying for a meal at a crowded restaurant, almost ALL of our leaguers showed up and played.
Bell’s showed up with a pint of their Hazy Hearted IPA for everyone. Then we kicked into gear and started Fowling. The usual suspects went undefeated this week ... Scott Love and Shawn Fallon from Team 6 - Seriously?? didn’t lose and neither did Steve Bitel and Carlos Hernandez from Team 15 - Ypsi Country Let's Ride. But wait, who’s that in the undefeated list? It was the first time ever that Jess Wolverton and Dave Smith from Team – 14 The Outlaws did not lose! That included two mercies and wins over top ranked teams like Team 1 – It’s 4:20 Somewhere and Team 11 – Drinkers with a Fowling Problem. Props to The Outlaws!!
We had team spare from Team 3 - This Is Your Partner in Game 3 for the extra half point. Since teams 13 and 16 had already played each other twice, they took game 4 off so you will see in the standings that we have all played the same number of matches. Holding on to first place is Team 6 – Seriously? at a heady 19-2 followed by Team 2 – Two Bears One Lane and Team 8 – Fowled Folks Home, both at 17-4, and Team 1 – It’s 4:20 Somewhere at 16-5.
The Brewery of the Week next week is Sweetwater and the beers of the week are their IPA Variety Pack featuring the Hazy IPA on draft and Mosaic Single Hop IPA, Hazy Double IP and Sweetwater IPA in cans. Lots of choices with only a month left to go until Spring begins.

WEEK 4
ROUND ROBIN COMPLETE / TWO TIED FOR FIRST Place
Week 4 – Tuesday February 7, 2023
Our fancy new Winter League shirts arrived and almost everyone got one in their requested size. Daniel from Brewdog gave us some interesting information about their European Craft Beer label and their beer of the week Elvis Juice, mentioning their hotel in Columbus Ohio (Yuck!) with three fridges; one for beer in the room, another for your other stuff, and one in the bathroom for a “shower beer” (Yum!). Soon, tap handles for fresh draft right to your room. I sense a league road trip!!
This week, only one team made it through without a defeat and that was Team #2 – Two Bears One Lane. They cleared our fellow second place team, #8 – Fowled Folks Home in the first match, then handed Team #6 – Seriously? their only defeat in game three. Two-time champions #11- Drinkers with a Fowling Problem were next in defeat in game four then AFA qualifier Team #15 Ypsi Country Let’s Ride fell in game five. So, it’s not like the level of competition was light. They just simply beat most of the best all in one week.
That makes a mini log jam at the top of the standings. While #6 – Seriously? still holds the lead on percentage points, #2 – Two Bears One Lane are tied with them in match wins.
There were some spares this week ... Team 3 - This Is Your Partner picked up a team spare in game 1, Team 10 - Don't Drink and Derive did it in game 2 and Team 6 - Seriously?? got one in game 4.
The Brewery of the Week next week is Bell’s and the beer of the week is their Hazy Hearted IPA on draft. Just a reminder to check with your spouses next week when making your substitute plans, since it is Valentine’s day ... “Hey honey, want to come watch me Fowl and then grab a late dinner?” Now you know why my wife is my team partner!!

WEEK 3
the rich get richer / 2 bonks, 2 spares and a strike
Week 3 – Tuesday January 31, 2023
The teams with the best records did very well and put a little distance between themselves and the rest of the pack. Foremost among them was Team 6 – Seriously? They were dominant going 4-0 winning their first three matches on the mercy rule (up by 4 games in a match). They waited until their last match for their only game loss. Then they added bonus points in game when Scott Love got his first Ypsi Bonk ever! (fuckin’ figures). He wasn’t alone on the bonus points either. Brad Crone from Team 13 – Pindiots got a Strike in game 1 and followed it up with a Bonk in game 2. The subs for Team 16 – Dancing Fowl picked up a team spare in game 1 as did Team 5 – A Few Good Fowls in game 3. Also, ask Tommy Andre if he picked up the 7-10 split. He did, but during an exhibition match during his bye. No bonus points for that.
We now have no undefeated teams as Team 1 – It’s 4:20 Somewhere sustained their first and second loss. The new leader at 11-1 is Team 6 – Seriously?? Team 2 -Two Bears One Lane, Team 1 - It's 4:20 Somewhere and Team 8 - Fowled Folks Home are all right behind at 10-2.
We also have no winless teams as the teams at the bottom of the standings all picked up a match win this week.
We will have our fancy new Winter League shirts next week and we will have our first beer provided by Brew Dog, their Grapefruit IPA “Elvis Juice”, thankyouverymuch.

WEEK 2
Five undefeated teams, 2 bonks
Week 2 – Tuesday January 24, 2023
Week Two was a bit more organized with all of the cash registers working as everyone walked in the door. Dues were paid, teams were ready to play. We got some info from Jess from Old Nation Brewing on the Beer of the Week, Rubikon, their Italian Pilsner. Everyone had a chance to grab a free pint and off we went.
The new schedule will be a bit funky through the next 3 weeks as we make up games due to the schedule change. You will see in the standings below that some teams have played 7 games, most 8 and others 9 games. So your standings will be by percentages.
It was a good night for a few of the teams that signed up early (low numbered teams). Team 1 - It's 4:20 Somewhere, Team 2 -Two Bears One Lane, Team 3 - This Is Your Partner (love the name!), Team 4 - Bonk Shells and Team 6 - Seriously?? all went undefeated this week. Terry and Isabella Ferstle from Team 1 - It's 4:20 Somewhere had a bye but won their other 3 games and stand at 7-0, top of the standings and undefeated for the season. You would think going undefeated for two weeks would put you way out front but that's not the case. Both Team 6 - Seriously?? and Team 3 - This Is Your Partner also have 7 wins but each have 1 loss. Just a game back.
It was a good night for Bonks as well. We got two with Ryan Grangood from Team 17 - Intentional Pounding getting one in Round 2 and Christopher Castro from Team 13 - Pindiots got his in the extra 5th round.
All of the results from week 2 are below. Don't forget to sign up for the Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/472216891458794. I will post the standings and results from each week and a link to this page so you can dig into the stats. Brewery of the week next week is Griffin Claw and the Beer of the week is Norm's Raggedy Ass IPA on tap.

schedule update
Having team three a no show threw a wrench in the schedule last week. Going from a 20 team schedule with byes then switching out team 19 to replace team 3 in week one created some interesting scheduling challenges. Many of the games we played during the first 4 rounds in week 1 appeared in the next four games scheduled for week 2.
As not to be unfair to any team it took a while to rework the schedule and it just wouldn’t work without adding some extra 9PM sessions. So you will see the attached schedule with a few byes followed by some extra 9PM games for some until we clear the first round robin of the schedule (with an extra 9PM session for all) on week 4. Then we start a new round robin in week 5 and we manage to get all the games in by the end of week 8. So we will do something fun like a position night or pre-tournament of some sort in week 9 before the final week tournament in week 10.
So here’s the new schedule.
In the Fun Stuff department, the brewery of the week next week is Old Nation and the beer of the week is their new Rubikon Italian Style Pilsner. Enjoy!!

The LEAGUE is off and running
18 teams, 1 night, 183 games, 3 bonks and a SPAre!
Week 1 – Tuesday January 17, 2023
It was a great first week of our fun Winter Doubles League with no less than 20 of the 36 members being first time leaguers! Yay!! We started off with the cash registers going on the blink, making our kick off a bit stilted but shortly after 7PM we got underway. We instituted the new AFA rules package for doubles leagues that includes extra game points for Bonks and Strikes (1 win) and Splits and Spares (1/2 a win). Sure enough we had 3 bonks and a spare! Terry Ferstle from It’s 4:20 Somewhere, Eric Geiger from Don't Drink and Derive and Jaren Carble from Squirt Off The Wall all got to pull the Bonk Honk. Add to that a team spare (knocking down all the pins in your team’s first two shots) by It’s 4:20 Somewhere and you have the makings of an epic night of league play. We are only one week in, and we only have one undefeated team ... Team 1 - It’s 4:20 Somewhere. Terry and Isabella Ferstle dominated all night long winning 15 of their 17 games plus adding 1 ½ bonus points with their Bonk and their Spare. No one else came close. For now, the standings will be sorted first on Match Winning Percentage, then on Game Winning Percentage. Remember head-to-head wins is the first tiebreaker for seeding in the year ending tournament, then it’s games won. Since the cash registers were down last week, be ready to pay $200 ($175 for AFA members) or you can pay $20 weekly, your choice. The standings are below. Housekeeping

LEague Kickoff
19 teams compete in winter doubles league
Welcome to the Winter 2023 Doubles League at the Fowling Warehouse Ypsi Ann Arbor.
Finally it’s here. The start of the Winter Doubles Fowling League.
First order of business is that I need a sub for tonight. If anyone knows of someone who would like to do some free fowling, let me know.
We have a lot of things to do tonight so it would be great if you could arrive a little early.

- If you don’t have an AFA card yet, then we will need to get you signed up. It’s part of your league dues so if you do have an AFA membership, it’s only $175 per person for the entire league, $200 if you don’t. AFA membership has perks. 10% off all AFA and Fowling Warehouse Merchandise, 20% off Lane Rentals and 50% off open play (after league ends).
- We will have a discussion about the rules, scorekeeping, changes from last year’s scoring (Bonks, Strikes, Spares and Splits) and winning as many games you can in 20 minutes. If you are new try not to miss this.
- I have attached the T-Shirt sizes. We will order these this week so make sure I have the right size.
- I also am missing a few team names. Start thinking about what you want your team name to be. I would love to have this settled by next week.
- As we have 19 teams this season, one team will get a BYE each round. We also added a 5th game in the last two weeks so you get to play everyone twice and there is an even number of games between all the teams.
- Our beer of the week is 3 Floyds Gumballhead and our brewer’s representative will be on site tonight to describe the tasty brew and present you with a free 16oz draft to start the evening.
- We also have a league website where you can check on the schedule, stats, standings and league news. https://www.fwya2.com/leagues.html Check in there for updates on a regular basis.
- There is a Facebook Page just for Ypsi Ann Arbor Fowling, Leagues, Competition and News. Follow the page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/472216891458794
