It's the playoff so there was no shortage of angst and beer. Here's the story. We're sticking to it!
We took 4 weeks 64 matches and 231 games to get to this ... one game for all the marbles ... and then another game for all the marbles if you win ... and then, OK you get it. Win, you get marbles. Lose, no marbles!
We started off with a scratch. Team 1 Spartan Invasion had to pass on the playoffs due to scholastic endeavors. Swad and Sudhanv had finals and they carried more importance than trying to take down the regular season champs in round one. As an 8 seed it would have been a tough win for them. It also looked like 6-Holey Poley might be out of the tournament. Scott Love got bone spurs and couldn’t walk, let alone Fowl. Last minute sub Tim Stankiewicz came through to fill in for Love and they matched up with 6 seed 5-The Fowlskis. After being awarded “The Good Sports” award last week they put up a fierce fight but came up short against 6-Holey Poley by a count of 3-1, ending Elizabeth and Lisa’s championship dreams in round one. The most competitive first round matchup was by the numbers. 4 seed 2-Bonk Shells were taking on 5 seed 3-Disco Dogs. Both teams were veterans of our first ever league last June. They battled for 20 minutes and came down to the same place they started. Tied. In overtime Brandon and Alicia finally won one over Renee and Kellie by a final of 2-1. 2-Bonk Shell advance to the semifinals. The upset of the evening took place on Lane 14. 7 seed 7-Here 4 The Beer have been improving all season long. They drew 2 seed 8-Fowled Folks Home. Game one was a fast victory for the favorites. Game two featured an awesome kill shot by Amy. Tied up with the hammer in hand they moved on to game three which came down to a long one pin battle. Patty knocked down the last pin only to have Lon (hammer) match her on the rebuttal. Another long 1 pin battle ensured with Lon taking out the final pin with 2 minutes remaining at the start of game four. Scott and Patty from 8-Fowled Folks Home hurriedly knocked down the pins, with Scott hitting the kill pin with seconds left, unfortunately not leaving enough time for Lon and Amy to respond. The incomplete game did not count so 7-Here 4 The Beer prevailed with their first big victory of their young Fowling career by a final score of 2-1! Congrats! The semifinals saw the first action from our regular season champions 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere. For Terry’s birthday this weekend, family came in from out of town and they surprised him at (where else) the Fowling Warehouse for the Friday Tournament. Almost all Ferstles participated with Terry, Isabella and Savvy all advancing to the semifinals. Surprise ending? Savvy took out father Terry in the semis (Happy freakin’ Birthday) then took out her sister in the finals to win the tournament. So we got to see the second and third best Ferstles team up against 2-Bonk Shells. For the second round in a row 2-Bonk Shells took the game to overtime, but this time were not lucky enough to grab the win falling to top seed 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere 3-2 in OT. In the other semifinal bracket, the newly emboldened 7-Here 4 The Beer drew 3 seed 5-Holey Poley. The breaks did not go their way this time. While they played very competitively, Sue Kinney and sub Tim Stankiewicz were too much for them winning 2-0. That set up the finals and the 3rd place game. True to form, 2-Bonk Shells went to overtime again with 7-Here 4 The Beer. And also true to form the best team to never win took it on the chin as upstarts Lon and Amy of 7-Here 4 The Beer grabbed the third place prize money. |
The finals were as exciting as any in previous memory. Top seed 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere and 3 seed 5-Holey Poley traded wins as the clock ticked down. In the fifth and final game Terry and Isabella knocked down the kill pin to seal the victory with just seconds remaining, sealing the tournament championship, the trophies and the prize money in front of family members who filled the gallery. The Ferstles came in first. Poetic. They are the “Ferst Family” of Fowling here in Ypsi Ann Arbor. 5-Holey Poley gladly grabbed the second place prize money.
Fowling For Dollars was the perfect way to land the plane of the April Doubles League season. Teams finishing 3 through 7 got to throw, getting a dollar for each pin down. No bonks. No Strikes. But the money did go rather quickly as all of the teams and players are getting better and better. Everyone walked away with some cash.
Congrats to Isabella and Terry Ferstle of 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere, our 2023 April Doubles League champs.
We hope the everyone signs up for our Spring Doubles League. We are up to 5 teams right now but I know that many of you are on the fence about joining. If you are going to miss a week or two, don’t worry. We have an army of folks who have pledged to sub if needed. If you need a partner, sign up and we will find you one. Bottom line is “The more the merrier”. We hope to see everyone back next Tuesday as we start right back up with our Spring Doubles League primer for SuperFowl in Indy over Memorial Day Weekend.

The final week of the regular season. Spirits were high and there were A LOT of very close games.
Round One featured a very tight match with a last second shot from Isabella (depending on which clock you were watching) decided the match. Since it is impossible to start both sides of the timer simultaneously, one side is always a second or two off. 5-The Fowlskis win the good sports award for the week, allowing the last second kill shot from Isabella Ferstle to give 4-It’s Always 4:20 Somewhere for a 3-2 final score. Not as dramatic, but every bit as close was the 3-2 victory by 6-Holey Poley over 3-Disco Dogs. 2-Bonk Shells went 3-0 over 7-Here For the Beer and 8-Fowled Folks Home couldn’t pull off the mercy with one pin left but gladly took the 3-0 victory over 1-Spartan Invasion.
|
Round Two saw 2-Bonk Shells, the “Best Team That Never Wins”, win 3-2 over 8-Fowled Folks Home. 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere took it on the chin 1-3 with a loss to 6-Holey Poley who were making their way up the standings, looking for a shot at first place. 3-Disco Dogs won a very close match 3-2 over 7-Here For the Beer. Karma came through for 5-The Fowlskis for their good sportsmanship in game one with a 3-0 victory over 1-Spartan Invasion.
|
Round Three had 6-Holey Poley add one more win, albiet a very close one, over 5-The Fowlskis by a score of 2-1. This put them in position to take first if someone could knock off 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere. That was not to be as Isabella and Terry clinched a share of the championship with a very close 2-1 win over Amy and Lon Woodard of 7-Here For the Beer. That combined with a 2-0 loss to 3-The Disco Dogs ended the title hopes of 8-Fowled Folks Home. Meanwhile, no one was paying attention to 2-Bonk Shells who racked up their third win of the evening 3-0 over 1-Spartan Invasion.
|
Round Four was the final game of the regular season. 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere eliminated any doubt of who the regular season champion would be with a 3-0 victory over 3-Disco Dogs. The fight for second place was in full swing and 8-Fowled Folks Home managed to pull off a 3-1 victory over 6-Holey Poley putting them in a tie for second place with 8-Fowled Folks Home getting the runner up on percentage of games won. Swad and Sudhanv Komanduri of 1-Spartan Invasion had one last big game to stay out of the cellar against 7-Here For the Beer who occupied that spot. Lon and Amy came through with a 2-0 victory to put them in a tie for 7th with 7-Here For The Beer grabbing the 7th position on games won percentage. The feel good story of the night was 2-Bonk Shells. They always seem to get the wrong end of the stick when it comes to close games but this was Brandon and Alicia’s night. They grabbed a 3-1 victory over 5-Fowlski’s for their first ever sweep ... 4 wins, no losses.
|
The finals standings are now complete and our regular season champs are 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere featuring Isabella and Terry Ferstle with a 12-4 final record. Second place goes to -Fowled Folks Home at 10-6 with a 37-23 .617 games won percentage. That just eked out 6-Holey Poley who shares the 10-6 match record but went 33-31 .516 in games. A tie for fourth was broken by games won as well. 2-Bonk Shells raced up from 6th place to take it with a 9-7 record and a 34-24 .586 games percentage. 3-Disco Dogs ended up in 5th at 9-7 and 28-30 .483. Sixth place had 5-The Fowlskis alone at .500 finishing 8-8 32-28 .533. And of course the tie for seventh at 3-13 was broken on games won with 7-Here for the Beer taking it with a 17-35 .327 clip. 1-Spartan Invasion dropped to eighth with 10-37 .213.
That means that 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere gets the Regular Season Championship prize of $100.00, 8-Fowled Folks Home is the runner up with a $75.00 prize and 6-Holey Poley grabs $50.00 for third place.

WEEK 3
changing of the guard!
Week 3 – Tuesday April 18, 2023
Thanks to all the league members who came out for the First Anniversary Party last Thursday and the Friday Indoor Beer Festival and Friday Tournament last week. It was great seeing everyone and we are STILL sharing the wonderful basket from the Ferstles with the staff. They love it!!
Some things on the calendar to be aware of. Sign up for the Spring League, Tuesdays in May and June, is open. Let’s try to get a good crowd for this one. Just go to https://fowlingwarehouse.com/ypsiannarbor/leagues/ to sign up. This Sunday, there is WRESTLING at the Fowling Warehouse. The Independence Pro Wrestling League is setting up their ring and the show starts at 6PM. Find out more at https://fowlingwarehouse.com/ypsiannarbor/events/independence-pro-wrestling-ipw-onslaught/
Scott Love couldn’t make it this Tuesday, but Eric “E” Smith sat in and provided a spark to 6-Holey Poley with Sue Kinney. In Match 1 they ran out to a big lead on 8-Fowled Folks Home who managed to get the score back the 3-2 before time ran out. 2-Bonk Shells picked up a win against the tough to beat 5-Fowlskis with Lisa Johnson back from the dentist this week. 7-Here 4 The Beer picked up win #2 by a score of 3-1 against 1-Spartan Invasion. Amy and Lon are figuring this game out. They could be a tough win in the final week and playoffs. 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere were at the top of their game this week. The first victims were 3-Disco Dogs who went down by a 3-1 margin.
Match 2 saw 7-Here 4 the Beer and 8-Fowled Folks Home flailing away at a single pin in the first game of the match until Amy cleared it out. Game 2 featured a 9 pin open from Amy only to have Scott and Patty slowly pick away at the pins when they couldn’t kill it. Eventually KPP did what she does and in a wild 2 minute scramble 8-Fowled Folks Home won on pincount. 5-The Fowlskis took out their first match loss frustrations on 3-Disco Dogs with a 4-0 mercy. 2-Bonk Shells managed to prove that E is not invincible in match 2 picking up a 3-1 win over 6-Holey Poley. 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere continued winning with a 3-1 victory over 1-Spartan Invasion.
As if to prove that Match 2 was a fluke, 6-Holey Poley made quick work of 1-Spartan Invasion with a 4-0 mercy to kick off Match 3. 2-Bonk Shells and 3-Disco Dogs faced off with Brandon and Alicia coming out on top 2-1 over Renee and Kelly. 8-Fowled Folks Home and 4 It’s 4:20 Somewhere locked in a battle for first place overall. After trading wins for 5 games Isabella and Terry were up 3-2. Patty managed to knock down the final pin but time ran out before Terry could get a throw off taking the win. 5-The Fowlskis continued their winning ways edging out 7-Here 4 The Beer in a 3-2 match.
Match 4 was a race to the finish. 3-Disco Dogs finally picked up a 2-1 win on 1-Spartan Invasion. Brothers Swad and Sudhanv were unable to eke out a win this week. 6-Holey Poley ended 7-Here 4 The Beer’s night with a 3-1 loss. 8-Fowled Folks Home were no match for 5-Fowlskis losing 3-1. The most exciting match was between 2-Bonk Shells and 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere. At the end of regulation both had won 2 games. After one throw in Extra Time, it was still tied. In throw 2, Isabella knocked down 5. Alicia needed 5 to tie, 6 to win. She only got 4 giving 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere their 4th victory of the night.
So there is a change at the top of the standings. 1-It’s 4:20 Somewhere managed to vault themselves into first place at 9-3 going 4-0 for the night. 8-Fowled Folks Home drops to 8-4 and second place going 1-3 for the night. There’s a log jam at 7-5. 5-The Fowlskis went 3-1 and hold third on Game Winning Percentage. 6-Holey Poley also went 3-1 and are in 4th at 7-5 and .500 on games. 3-Disco Dogs is also 7-5 but hold fifth place one game below .500. Rounding out the standings are 2-Bonkshells in sixth at 5-7, 1-Spartan Invasion in seventh at 3-9 and 7-Here 4 The Beer in eighth at 2-10.
Next week is the final Tuesday of April and our last night of regular season play. We will have Playoffs and Fowling For Dollars on Tuesday May 2 before we kick of the Spring League on Tuesday May 9th. See everyone then!

WEEK 2
Happy Anniversary!
Week 2 – Tuesday April 11, 2023
Due to the short league, we haven’t had a “Beer of the Week” ... so we made one up. The Ferstle Special. Isabella and Terry’s favorite is Blue Moon. Since we stockpiled it for the tournament last week, we put them on special for only $3 each. That made Team 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere happy!!
The first three games of week two have us completing the Round Robin, playing the teams not yet played in the first week. Game One had 3-Disco Dogs 2-1 over 1-Spartan Invasion, 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere 3-1 over 2-Bonk Shells, 6-Holey Poley 2-1 over 7-Here 4 the Beer and 8-Fowled Folks Home 3-1 over 5-The Fowlskis.
Game 2 featured some excitement when Amy and Lon of 7-Here 4 The Beer got their first match win 2-1 over 2-Bonk Shells (fuckin’ figures). Renee and Kelly of 3-Disco Dogs continued their unlikely winning streak after rejoining the league 2-1 over 6-Holey Poley. Elizabeth and sub Terra of 3-The Fowlskis rebounded over the very competitive Terry and Isabella of 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere by a 3-2 score. Fowled Folks Home dominated with a 4-0 skunking of 1-Spartan Invasion.
Game 3, after being on the wrong side of a brand-new team’s first match win, Alicia and Brandon of 2-Bonk Shells erased that bad memory and cobbled together a 3-0 victory over the previously undefeated Patty and Scott B of 8-Fowled Folks Home. The Ferstles of Team 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere came off their game 2 defeat to skunk Scott L and Sue of 6-Holey Poley 4-0. Swad and Sudhanv of 1-Spartan Invasion also forgot their game 2 mercy to pull off a 2-0 victory over 5-Fowlskis. 3-Disco Dogs continued their winning streak (6 games) ending 7-Here 4 The Beer’s 1 game winning streak with a 3-1 victory. That ended the first round of robin.
On to Game 4, a repeat of Week 1 Game 1. Interesting fact. 3-Disco Dogs had only 1 loss. That was their first game to 8-Fowled Folks Home. Well, it happened again. This time it was a 3-1 loss. So far the only team to beat 3-Disco Dogs is 8-Fowled Folks Home. 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere continued their winning ways with a 4-0 mercy of 7-Here 4 The Beer. 1-Spartan Invasion also continued winning with a 2-1 defeat of 2-Bonk Shells. 6-Holey Poley righted the ship with a 2-1 victory over 5-The Fowlskis.
3-Disco Dogs, 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere and 8-Fowled Folks home all logged 3-1 records this week. 1-Spartan Invasion and 6-Holey Poley both went 2-2 while 2-Bonk Shells, 5-Fowlskis and 7-Here 4 The Beer were 1-3. No undefeated teams. No 4 loss teams. A little parity in week 2!
The standings still show 8-Fowled Folks Home in front at 7-1. They are literally the only thing keeping second place team 3-Disco Dogs out of the league lead as they sit at 6-2 with two losses to Team 8. 4-It’s 4:20 Somewhere is in third at 5-3. 5-The Fowlskis and 6 Holey Poley share fourth at 4-4. 1-Spartan Invasion has sixth at 3-5. 2-The Bonk Shells tough start to the season has them at 2-6 in seventh. Rookies 7-Here 4 The Beer are off the schneid but still in last place at 1-7.
The ”second half” of the season begins Tuesday with a repeat of the last three games of week 1 and the first game of week 2 as we wind our way through the second round. Only one more week after that and then the playoffs and Fowling For Dollars on Tuesday May 3.
Next up, our 6 week Spring League begins on Tuesday May 10th. Three weeks on, then a week off around Memorial Day Weekend (or Super Fowl in the Fowling vernacular) followed by three weeks in June and a playoff. Signup is open now at https://fowlingwarehouse.com/ypsiannarbor/leagues/
And thanks to Elizabeth, Terra, Terry, Isabella and Alma for joining us last night at the First Anniversary celebration. Fun for all and what a great basket the Ferstles brought. The staff will not be going hungry for a while. (Not to mention the Almond Champagne. Can’t wait to find a reason to pop that cork!!).

WEEK 1
Welcome to the league!
Week 1 – Tuesday April 4, 2023
Welcome back everyone to another season of Fowling. This is going to be a quick one. You will get to play everyone at least twice before we hit the playoffs.
Winner for this evening was Scott and Patty Brown of Team 8 Fowled Folks Home. They managed to defeat all four of their opponents for a clean sheet in week one.
We had two teams that manage to win all but one. First was Team 3 The Disco Dogs with Renee Smith and Kellie Castle, back in the league again after a Winter hiatus. Their only loss was to the aforementioned Fowled Folks Home. The other was the reconstituted Team 5 The Fowlski’s featuring Lisa Johnson with OG Fowlski Elizabeth Gayeski who only lost to The Disco Dogs.
It was a tough start for perennial league leader Scott Love who is paired with Sue Kinney as Team 6 Holey Poley. They lost the first two but won a frenetic third match on the last shot against Team 2 Bonk Shells Alicia Curley and Brandon Tuttle (fuckin’ figures) and the fourth game against Team 1 Spartan Invasion featuring Swad Komanduri’s brother Sudhanv (this week with a sub for Swad).
It's typical to treat newcomers like guests when they arrive. Well, that memo didn't get around to the veterans in our April 2023 Doubles League. Outside their near win against Holey Poley, their only victory was when they played fellow newcomers Amy and Lon Woodard known as Team 7 - We're Here 4 the Beer. First match pitted them against Team 4 - It's 4:20 Somewhere with Terry and Alma (subbing for Isabella) Ferstle and her unorthodox but effective underhand style who got a 2-0 win. Team 7 did pick up a game win after losing in overtime, so it wasn’t a total loss. It’s 4:20 Somewhere split their two matches and Team 2 Bonkshells ended their night with only one win.
Here are the standings and the game results for you to ponder over. Remember that next Thursday is our One Year Anniversary Party from 4PM to 7PM with a Taco Bar provided by Condado Tacos, free Fowling, Ribbon Cutting and a chance to try our signature drink named “ONE” both to celebrate one year in business and cheer on those of us who only knock down ONE pin at a time. Friday night is our first Indoor Beer Festival featuring new beers from Founders. Fowling and 5 samples are only $20. $8 for 5 more samples. Remember, as a league member you get to Fowl for free all week long so take advantage of it!!
